Will do.
I'm finally getting round to sorting out my sound gear.
My microphones are okay, the radio links have been ordered (G2 Sennheisers) the Rycote's been patched up and new cables bought. All that's needed now is a field mixer and/or something which will enable me to record directly onto my laptop (for voice-overs) since, for reasons known only to itself, it will only accept a line in. My original idea of getting a Marantz 660 has been binned on cost grounds.
Hence the survey of Shure/Rolls/etc. Rental and work-wise I use SQNs but they're far to expensive for me to buy new, and a second-hand one doesn't appeal since it'll have been used professionally (and be stuffed!).

I have a very small soundcraft spirit notepad 4X XLR/line in's 2X stereo 2X mixer outs. I think you can get it for the neat some of £40. After dong a bit of research this looks ok- Samson MDR6 6-Channel Mixer. I think it’s look for good reviews and a cheap price for this one. Will ask what my dad recommends later when he comes home.

Cheers Luke, the Samson looks very interesting and within my budget, although I'm now tending towards getting a portable "field mixer" instead of a table-top, but still not decided.
Edit:
I've also been looking at USB devices, especially the M-Audio pre amp. Now I'm totally unsure :( What did your dad suggest Luke?

Just an update for those interested.
Lots of research, annoying salesmen and pestering soundies has taught me that:
Shure mixers are good but no longer the state of the art.
Rolls has no distributor in the UK
So now I'm being pointed in the direction of "Sound Devices" namely the 302 Compact production mixer. http://www.sounddevices.com/products/302master.htm
which sells at a price of around a grand (uk pounds)

Well, what I was told was that the more up to date stuff from Sound Devices is better quality and still a bit cheaper than the Shure mixers, so it's not a case of keeping up with fashion but rather getting better value for money.

Oh yeah! I'd love to get an SQN. In my opinion the best for the job.
I just can't afford to pay two grand (which is what a secondhand 4S will probably end up going for) and risk my missus cutting my spherical appendages off with a blunt, rusty knife.
She's already started to suspect that the G2 radio-mike sets which have recently appeared in my equipment room, cost slightly more than I've admitted to.
I know the SQN range very well, have used them myself loads of times and really appreciate them. They're just too effin expensive for what I want.... something for those (very few) occasions when a friend or relative says "you're a cameraman, do a wedding/birthday/documentary video for me will ya?" and I'm too drunk/scared to tell them to bugger off and pay someone to do it.
