Default Volume Leveling While Editing Video

I'm doing some video editing for a friend and I have a question.

The files he gave me have very low volume on all of the sound. I'm looking for a way to "turn up the volume" permantly on the files. Maybe some kind of nice and easy to use video converting software.

I just need someone to point me in the right direction.

I either do it via real time compression in vegas, or if i want it done permanently, i use soundforge.

Most editors have a function to normalize sound, this ups the levels to the max. It will increase noise tho.

Download a fully functional demo (e.g. Adobe Audition). This will give you a few weeks to play with it and get it right before the demo runs out.
