'Codec' is a contraction of Coder and Decoder. Typically these are special programs used to compress and decompress data, like digital video or audio. There are a tremendous variety, though only a few see common usage today. In windows they can be shared with other applications, or not. The sharing schemes fall in two categories, VFW (Video For Windows, the original method) and DSH (Direct SHow, the newer one that microsoft has more control over). This makes life 'fun' for people writing applications. The opportunities for error are certainly enough to guarantee job security and a constant dialog with the users.
Directx9 and Media Player 7, 9 or 10 installation brings a lot of the most commonly used codecs, certainly PCM is one. The MPEG 1, level 2 audio codec (the standard compression for older DVD audio) may be also, but it may not be shared with other programs, like MovieShaker, which should have it's own codecs built in.
PCM is basically zero compression audio. No distortion and huge file sizes. MPEG1-2 compression has some distortion, usually not audible, and the audio file is 5 to 10 times smaller than a PCM file for the same audio.
