Default expensive mike?

For motor sonds and wind noise there's no need for an expensive mike. I bought a high quality mike from Sony that mounts directly on the camcorder hot shoe but this wouldn't do in the stated situation. The mike needs to be located away from the wind and the camera, at least as I use it filming motorcycle group events, must be high up into the airflow. Fortunately when an external mike is attached the camera's internal mike is bypassed.

High up into the airflow? Could you explain what that means.

Hey,

Im looking into this too and it seems you either have to shell out on a really good cam with with XLR inputs or stick with what you have and get a portable audio device as well.

This looks very good.... M-AUDIO - MicroTrack II - Professional 2-Channel Mobile Digital Recorder

Anything by M Audio will be good as far as quality goes.....but you will still need a good mic to get the most out of it...

Good luck

Motorcycle ferrings are designed to direct airflow upward and sideways. By reaching your hand outward while riding you can feel the quiet envelope that surrounds the rider, it's like sticking your hand out the window of a moving vehicle. With the bike traveling at 65 mph the airflow speeds up to about 80mph as it flows overhead, like the increase in velocity as air flows over an airplane wing. the camera, being mounted on top of my helmet, is directly in this airflow. The advantage is that I can photograph forward and sideways movements of the other bikes as well as sideline points of interest, simply by glancing at them. The movie "easy rider" had some nice examples of artistic formation riding as well as excellent lens flair photography.
