Is there anyway at the editing stage to lessen or remove the rumble/hum picked up by the on-board mic. I am using Final Cut HD and have imported from Sony FX1

Have you tried applying one of the Noise Reduction Filters? There's actually one called Hum Remover where you can adjust the frequency of the sound you wish to remove. I'm using Final Cut Pro 6, but I suspect it's also there in FCP HD too.

incidently, I use FCP, and find that if you use an AUGraphicEQ filter, and turn down the 125Hz and 160Hz bars to their minimums, that is the best way to remove the hum, without effecting the rest of the audio.
