Default converting video to wavs

I recently bought a Sony DCR-SR200, which is a hard drive camera. I bought it with an intention to record music with it; the problem is the files the camera creates are some kind of mpg whose sound cannot be played by any program (seemingly) except the Sony software it came with, and there is no conversion option in that program. I have a type converter but when the video is converted to a regular mpeg the sound is gone and the video is very sluggish. Several of my editing programs cannot read the type of file.

My question is: What kind of editing program will be guaranteed to read the file? Thanks.

Try SUPER, it's a great freeware converter.

+1 on SUPER. It'll definitely do it. But why a camera rather than a minidisc or flash recorder? Seems like overkill for just audio. Both in file size and effort...
