Chances are, if you buy one that's "relatively cheap" what you'll get is one that's "relatively poor". You get what you pay for. What's your budget?

This looks exceptionally good value. (ebay link) eBay.co.uk: Sennheiser ME66 / K6 directional mic PLUS Rycote Grip (item 170100375114 end time 20-Apr-07 07:36:49 BST)

Good link Alan! That's exceptional value, normally you'd pay more than that for the microphone alone!
LTF have the M66/K6 for £315 plus vat, without the Rycote!

if you want a good value, budget, shotgun mic, the Sennheiser M66/K6 is the way to go. Avoid the Rode microphones which seem to be fashionable at the moment. Audio Technica is another good value for money brand but you won't get a better deal than the one Alan's found.

Have a look on ebay for Audio Technica stuff. Their AT897 is a popular shotgun microphone, almost (but not quite) up to the Sennheiser quality. If you want something a bit more directional then try the AT835b, also a nice sounding mic. Both of these retail new at around the two hundred quid mark.

Whatever you do, don't go cheaper, you will hear it and it's a pity to spoil all the good work by having poor sound.

I really would go the extra and take Alan's advice if you possibly can, the M66/K6 is a really nice combo and dirt cheap at that price.

yeah, don't skimp on the mic more than you are forced to. When wastching a movie you are much more likely to notice a glitch in the sound than a glitch in the picture. 75% of a movie is the audio remember!

I agree +++, crap video is far more bearable than crap sound.
