That would be useful. I understand velocity envelopes and can use them by themself on a single track, but what would happen if I placed another clip over the top of the velocity-envelopped clip at normal speed using chroma key so both show at the same time?
EDIT: forgot to say, nice demo vid and even nicer car!

Ok. If you right click the clip, go to Insert/Remove Envelope and select Velocity you get a blue bar appear on the clip. We all know that bit, right?
The bar is central in the clip. That's to say velocity 100%. Moving the bar up increases the speed to a maximum of 300% - pulling it to the bottom will bring it to 100% slower. (That is reverse at normal speed ). Return the bar to central and click on it at several points along the timeline. Little blue blocks (key points) appear on the bar. Now you can drag the point up or down to increase / decrease the speed at that point.
do it to several points and you can start really slow, speed up a bit and then go mega fast. Just play and you'll see. That's all I did with the car shots, just to demonstrate what can be done.
The idea of laying another track over the top is a good one but care will need to be taken. To avoid a mush of imagery (unless that's your aim) apply the envelope to the clip, copy it and paste it above. Like that you can tinker with the higher track just a smidge to get some really wowsy effects.
Hope this all helps guys.
Andy

0 Videos nominated Video Of the Month(s): 0 | | Velosity Envelope not avail.
Hey Great demo turn media and nice example learnvegas, but as several people have mentioned the option of velocity under envelopes is not listed. They mentioned this in regard to vegas 4 I have movie studio 6 platinum,(as I expect the others not seeing velocity envelope have the lower movie studio version not the many hundered dollar 6b/ or the d update now avail on sony) ((if you dont have a compleatly orange box with flames the length of the right side you got the prosumer version not the spensivePRO version)) and the 2 options are Composition Level and Fade to color....that's all - so do we need to add a setting somewhere else or something....because I really want to learn how to do this/need slow motion and freeze frames in my medical surveilance videos + I think a lot of effort is been given to this subject...so what can be said on this subject of not having Velocity as an option to select?
Update - yes I'm learning
It appears your options for speed in movie studio (6a thru b)/ or movie studio platinum 6a thru b (not totally orange box Full Version 6 a thru d & roughly 4 times the others price) allows 0.25to 4.00 so quarter speed to 4x plus the option to reverse those numbers where the full version of Vegas allows negative numbers and velosity enveloping options, as the 89 and 129 USD versions do not seem to allow velocity envelopes. for freeze frame I save a jpg pic and then add it back in where I got it, but it looks like it would be faster to upgrade to the full version so I could actually set velosity to Zero (0) without having to go into a snipits properties and set those .25-4 #'s which if you go beyond them it resets to the closest limit without prompting you. And yes one guy is correct the help files in studio talk about velocity envelopes but I bet he was talking full version 4 and the other person was talking movie studio.
Sony is pretty tricky keeping all these programs at various costs seeming to be named the same thing Six 6.0 - I did a lot of research before buying and still did not see the diffrence until now, maybe I'll remember that when I buy the HDV cam to go with the software and go with another brand.

i'm new to these forums as well as vegas video. i've been having the same problem as the guy that started this thread. i tried out your tip and it worked, but i was wondering if there is a way to actually slow down the sound instead of stretch it out?

Yes, so long as the vid and the sound are 'grouped' the sound will rubber band too.
To make groups, hold control and select the tracks with the lmb, right click, group, make new.

the sound rubber bands, but it isn't really any slower, it's just stretched out. since the sound is only stretched, the tone of the actor's voices are still the same, they just sound really echoey. i want to actually slow the sound down so that the actors' voices will be much deeper, like in those corny movies where they say "NOOOOOOOOOO!" in ultra slow mo and rather than it sounding like a man's voice, it sounds like some horrible beast. i hope i worded that right.
