    Yeah, this was a super annoying problem that in my opinion should already be taken care of "out of the box". What I found to work was actually downloading that latest DivX file from DivX.com. It sppears to have been more of a viewing issue than a "convert to see it" issue.

    Give it a shot and see if it works for you. I basically started downloading everything I read and giving them all a shot.

    I'm having massive problems trying to get an AVI to work. I'm at the point where I feel like I wasted good money on SV.

    I ran into this same problem a while back, and the Morgan codec worked. Now, it's saying the Morgan trial period expired, and I have to pay $30 to keep using it.

    Why the F**K wasn't AVI supported with Vegas right out of the box? It's crap like this that makes me wish I had gotten a pirated version instead of doing the right thing and paying for it - only to be screwed for it.

    I've tried the other codec pack and no dice with that, either.

    Any other ideas how I can get a simple AVI made with my camera into Sony Vegas?

    What are the problems? You don't actually state these? Didn't you download the DEMO? That's free? But that was your decision. When I "trail" new software I have learnt to get a demo first.

    What problem was that? As I said before you haven't said what that is? Onto your second point here. I've NEVER had to download the Morgan suite of CODECS to make Vegas to take an AVI. I've been running Vegas for seven years now, and all through the updates and versions I have never ever had the need to download a set of CODECS to make Vegas work? I should imagine this is mostly the same experience for others here-abouts too. So why aren't you paying to keep the MORGAN pack going? I really don't see this is an issue with Vegas? Convince me? Also, what format of AVI are you using? Download G-Spot and report back what you have. An AVI is only an envelop in which the data is stuffed. How that data is compiled and arranged in the AVI that is what is important. Actually what camera do you have?

    When I have read the "White Papers" on Vegas products, I don't see it mentioned anywhere the need to download other codecs? As far as I can tell it runs using the VfW ("Video for Windows") codec and that's been it. 'cos I am simple and believe I know my limitations, I try to keep things real simple. Latterly I have been using the free Lagarith CODEC 'cos it is fast and gives excellent clarity AND it has an ALPHA channel too.

    Firstly the "right out of the box" has been my experience - and for seven years now. And secondly I really can't condone your stance on pirating. As I said, hadn't you downloaded the DEMO? Did you get a warning or need to download extra CODECS?

    What is this "other codec pack"?

    As you HAVE paid ( and registered?) for the software I would be tempted to contact SONY directly and chase them for a solution.

    I have read that you can get into a type of CODEC Wars where CODECS keep vying for the attention of a given s/w. Maybe you have gotten entangled with this? Now that you have reached the Morgan expiry date I can't see any solution other paying-up OR going back to basics; challenge just what your AVI is; what camera do you have; getting to SONY and somehow simplify your work.

    Regarding your experience, Vegas has worked for me straight from download. And that's been my experience way back to VideoFactory too!

    EDIT: I see Grazie was typing at the same time as me.

    AVI is supported by Sony Vegas. Of course it is. However, it's only a wrapper. As you've discovered, it's the codec that's important.

    I'd find it extremely unlikely that it cannot support an avi dircect from your camera.

    What camera?

    And have you requested support from Sony Media Software?

    It's a Canon Powershot SD790is.

    No answer from Sony as yet on the problem.

    When I import the video and place it on the timeline, I'm only getting the audio track. No video track.

    A google search reveals that this is a fairly common problem. I had downloaded the morgan codecs for an earlier project and got that done fine. But at the time I considered that a temporary fix. Now I'm looking for a permanent one. It's very idiotic to just say "Buy the codecs" when I shouldn't have to.

    Gspot says it's a Motion JPEG, codec is installed.

    File Length Correct
    OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
    Video: 120 MB (95.31%)
    Audio: 5.88 MB (4.66%)
    AVI Overhead: 36.0 KB (0.03%)
    [ISFT] CanonMVI06

    When I drag this exact same clip onto the timeline, I only see audio. No video. Yet other non-AVI clips do show up with the video on the timeline.

    - Nice . . .moving swiftly along, in trying to assist.

    Nice camera. I have PowerShot 110is and that too does remarkable video. And I have just done a piece of analysis for you on my Canon PS output, which reveals:

    1] Through G-Spot:
    * MJPG
    * No CODEC required

    2] Through Vegas Explorer
    * Largarith lossless CODEC

    3] Through Vegas
    * Sony Motion JPEG

    Why there should be this difference between Vegas Explorer AND the Vegas Timeline reference I have no idea. I DO know that in VP9, my MJPEG AVI are playing.

    Try this: Set your Project settings by pointing VEgas at a sample AVI-MJPEG Canon output. I do this by:-

    1 - File

    2 - Properties

    3 - And on the "Template" line click on the folder Icon: "Match Media Settings" and navigate to one of the Canon AVI video media files and click on it, come back to the Project Properties Menu and click "Apply"

    This will set the Project to the Media. It will ALSO tell you something about Media content - which is very helpful.

    Try that and see.

    All can add is that I have Canon PS MJPEG output on my timeline in VegasPro 9 and it is working extremely well.

    Normally, I'm doing most of my video through my DVCAM workhorse, a Sony PD170.

    It's just that I have a few "off the cuff" videos made by the Canon point-and-shoot that I want to get into this video.

    I'll try those steps, Grazie, thanks.

    In regards to Sony Vegas (9) and avi files: I'm having a similar problem with Vegas 9 and avi files; I've got a decent converter (free) which would let me convert into wmv files; question is, just how much quality loss is there from avi to wmv?
    Reply appreciated.
