Has anybody tried ENABLING 3rd Party CODECS in Preferences in Vegas?

By default this remains OFF. I've never had to play with this setting.

    Grazie

I had the same problem as Diana with AVI files produced by the Canon PowerShot A620 camera. I had the same problem with my previous Canon. In SF the sound file is imported OK but not the video. I convert the file to WMV using Movie Maker and this works OK with little loss although the file is much smaller, AVI 43mb and the WAV 3mb. Not tried any of the codec suggestions other than removing the 3rd party option which had no effect.

My Sony Cybershot Camera produces a MPG file and this works fine.

    Hey

I am also having the avi. format problem. I have a series of a tv show on my computer in avi format which works on windows media player and windows movie maker, but in sony vegas only the sound works. I downloaded all the codecs suggested but they did not have any affect.

Just wondering if anyone has succeded in finding out the problem or has any more suggestions. It would be a pain to have to change there format in WMM for all 50 episodes..

This is not a simple matter.

An .avi is really only like a box with information in - a container - an .avi can contain video data encoded using a wide variety of codecs.

Files from things such as set top boxes, stills cameras, micro cameras often use very specific and uncommon codecs.

The ideal soloution is to use gspot (google it) to find out what codec is used then search the web and install that codec.

Second best is to install a codec 'pack' - some people have expirienced odd problems with this method so try the above first.

This approach should solve most problems with video not appearing.

    Default Solution

Hi there, I also had this problem...

There is an update to the Sony Vegas Platinun 8.0 software available on the sony creative website.

Sony Creative Software - Download: Updates

The update solved my avi problems. Apparently Sony Vegas runs on plugins not codecs so ignore all the update codec advice... and go straight to the most recent software updates for results ( mod note - please see below )

    nice one!

It is sensible to update your software to sort bugs. I suspect the update may have cotained some codecs too.

    BUT BUT

You are talking complete nonsense above with the codec & plug in advice. Plug ins are not codecs and do a completely differnet thing.

Plug ins are effects that run on the buses in vegas, such as - Sony Vegas Plug-ins - PlugInFinder | Toolfarm's Plug-in Finder

Codecs ( COmpression and DECcompression ) are ways of compressiing vidoes - Codec - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unless you are God or an alien being with omnisicient powers you risk a stoning by posting advice of doubtful provenance and veracity.

codecs smodecs I don't know what they are, but i did fix the problem.. so thought i'd post my achievements as my efforts trawling other forums and youtube clips did not solve it.

This clearly applies to gods too.
