I'm trying to edit a 5 minute short film in Sony Vegas. My video files are in DV format from my DVcamcorder. but it takes a long time just to load up the media files, and then is extremely slow in operation. I have an AMD64 3000fx, 3 x 200GB HD, 1.5GB RAM. Is there a way to speed it up so I can get on with the editing?

There's something very wrong there. Very wrong indeed. Vegas for me is as quick as a whistle, with lesser specs than that.

If I could have something a bit more detailed than just "configuration" that would be helpful.

I selected "IMPORT MEDIA". I then selected my video clips (about 25Gb). I clicked "OK" and Vegas freezes. I wait about 2 minutes and finally it starts doing something. 5 minutes later, it is less than half-way through importing the files. I don't dare click on anything or it will freeze again! About 5 minutes later, it freezes again. 2 minutes later I see movement of the "import" bar. A minute later I get the error "An Error occurred during the current operation. An Exception has occurred".

I have tried to import the files several times. The only way to do it, seems to be to import them in small chunks. This is unnacceptable.

I am using a fresh install of windows XP SP2 and Sony Vegas 6.

I have also tried on my Intel P4 2.4Ghz 1GIG RAM, 3 x 200GB HD and the result is the same.

As I said before, the video files are .DV from my DVcamcorder. They are very large, about 187mb for a 4 second file. The total size of all the clips comes to 24gb.

For this 5 minute short film, I have around 40 minutes of video footage.

I am importing it all into vegas so I can audition and choose the clips I need.

Is this not the correct way to go about it? I am going to keep trying and let you know how I get on.

This problem is about Vegas being too slow. My post in the other section is about batch converting DV files. Why would one need "locking"?

Because I believe the reason Vegas is slow for you is due to way you've captured your footage (on a Mac). I believe one is linked to the other.

I didn't know they were linked, but after research can now confirm that the speed of vegas is not linked (in this case) to the file size, but to the file format.

I'm kinda surprised at the lack of solutions people are offering to this as it seems like the most basic problem to overcome before anyone can edit files. After about 40 hours of trawlling the internet, trying numerous programs which claim to "convert all known video formats", speaking to file conversion developers (TMPGenc told me that their software cannot convert DV2 files- sort it out TMPGenc!!!), and more, I have now managed to find a very odd small program which is unstable, has a poor interface, and looks like it was written in Qbasic, but CAN and DOES batch convert DV files into AVI 2! Vegas so far appears to load and operate AVI 2 files a lot faster than DV from iMOVIE on a mac. I have managed to convert the files finally and can start work on my coursework.

I haven't started editing yet so as soon as I do I will try to report back whether the speed issue has changed for good.

I am flabberghasted with the effort just to convert video files.

There is a clear gap in the market here. What we all need is a single program which CAN and DOES convert ALL video file formats.
