Sony Vegas and Media Studio Yep, I know they're not related, but they both fall in the Premiere Alternative bracket in my humble opinion! Post here for Ulead Media Studio or Vegas video problems or pointers...

That's exactly what I suggested in your other thread, i.e the compression used isn't supported by Vegas:

I'm assuming here that these are Quicktime files encoded with a DV codec. I reckon that if you droped a clip on the Vegas timeline, then export to DV AVI, it would transcode pretty quick. Then import this back into Vegas.
I assumed they were quicktime as you were using a Mac. I assumed they wouldn't play very well in Vegas because I assumed that they needed transcoding to an AVI file to play smoothly.

If I'm reading your posts correctly, this is a fairly unique problem: you've captured on a Mac and therefore in Quicktime. You then want to use these captured clips on a PC, and therefore need to convert to AVI.

The quicktime file will be encoded with a DV codec, as would the destination AVI file once transcoded. The codec is the same, it's just the file format that's different. What you needed, if I'm reading your posts correctly, is a quicktime to AVI convertor. This isn't really something that crops up too often: if you capture on a Mac, you generally do all the editing on a Mac.

Yes, and thanks for that info. You were right.

The hard thing though was finding a program to convert the files!

For anyone in the same boat (although there doesn't seem to be ), the program which can convert DV files, is FIRESTORE DV FILE CONVERTER. It's a little odd but it works.

Vegas is the best video editing software out there in terms of interface and useability, and is only available for PC. I would consider editing on mac if Vegas was written for Mac also.

Having said this, if at all possible, I prefer to use PC for any kind of work as the mouse accuracy on Macs is appalling. Of course for advanced music production this is barely possible as PC audio production programs are slow, unreliable, and restricted to 1GB RAM as dictated by the windows Kernel. In comparison, those on MAC can use more ram, are faster, and more reliable, hence increasing user productivity and efficiency. It's a case of finding the best way out of a bad bunch.

My PCs however, do not have a firewire port for video capture. (this would have solved the problem, but I am very busy and needed these files converted quickly. I can't be entering into a compatibility battle with new hardware at this point in time).

Thanks for the help Marc.
