Wow, that's interesting... One other thing: This doesn't affect the Media FX, Video Event FX, Video Track FX dialogs. So far it seems that only the Pan/Crop timeline is borked.
On a related note, when you have the Pan/Crop window open, and the video is playing, does the timeline cursor in the Crop window move in realtime as the video is playing? Mine does not.

    Cat,
Tested with VPro 10 and 11 the Pan/crop window timeline zoom behaviour with one and two monitors and toggled the Play/Pause vs Play/Stop Preferences Option. In all cases I got very erratic results, sometimes the P&C window timeline scrollbar stays zoomed, other times not. Seems we both may be overlooking some option?
Meanwhile, I'll continue to use the scrollbar to zoom in on the timeline, not a big deal for me. And like you say the timeline cursor does not move in the P&C window.

When I was testing on FC's behalf I did think I'd got the same at one stage, but then I realised that it was because I was using the mouse scroll wheel when over the P&C window.

try doing all these things without using the scroll wheel (for testing purposes). I was surprised to discover how much I was using the scroll wheel subconsiusly.

If the "sync cursor" button on the timline of the P&C window is depressed I get the following:

When I play the preview, the cursor in the P&C window does not move until I stop, at which point it jumps to the correct place (so you could use the JKL keys to find the place where you want to add a keyframe and it will be in the correct place in the P&C window - all you'd need to do in your case is zoom out.)

When I step forward/backward in the preview using cursor keys, the cursor in the P&C window copies the movement - which, if you think about it, is the same as above.

    TimS,
thankyou for the suggestion. I did several tests without the mouse, but am still getting similar behaviour in all cases. Must try to find a wrong setting somewhere maybe.

Wow, I really want to thank you guys for rolling up your sleeves on this. I really do appreciate it. So, what I did:

Fresh install of 10.0e on virgin Win7/32 Dell laptop. The zoom DOES NOT reset on this install. The cursor, while not moving in realtime, does snap to the updated location when the timeline is paused, this is good enuf for what I need.
I'm going to try to wipe out every trace of the install on the XP desktop, reinstall, and see what happens. I still agree that this must be some almost hidden, stubborn config setting, since it only affects the Pan/Crop window. It's not erratic, 100% repeatable.
I'll let you guys know how it goes.

How interesting. Please do let us know.
In case you're not aware, Sony Creative Software can let you have instructiond for wiping out every trace. Add/Remove Program (or Programs and Features in Win7) to uninstall, plus deleting any likely folders is NOT enough to remove all traces. There's work to be done i the registry, and I wouldn't advise simply deleting any key that has "Sony" or "Vegas" in it.

    EDIT: See Note at end...

Oooookaaaaay...... any of you that have Boris Continuum Complete7/Vegas 10 Pro can try this at home. Looks like a lotta steps. It's not. Should take less than a minute.
    1. Open Vegas, no project.
    2. Create an empty video track.
    3. Fill it with about a minute of generated media, I used a solid white, probably doesn't matter at all what you use.
    4. Open the Pan/Crop editor, note the size(width) of the timeline drag(horizontal scroll)bar.
    5. Zoom the timeline so that the drag bar is short, maybe 25% of full width.
    6. Go back to the main timeline and play your blank boring white video. Stop or pause it.
    7. Note the size of the timeline drag bar(zoom) from Step 5. No change, stays zoomed.
    8. On the video track, add a Video Event FX. I used Cookie Cutter. I created a nice vignette, although I doubt it matters.
    9. Repeat Steps 5,6,7. So far so good.
    10. Add a Media FX to the track. Find BCC Pan and Zoom in the list. Click Add. Click OK. Hey! What just happened to that horizontal timeline scroll bar? We didn't even play anything yet! Oh well, let's zoom it back to a small size.
    11. Play the timeline, and stop or pause it. There you go. Auto Zoom Reset.
    12. But here's the interesting part. Remove the Event FX (Cookie Cutter), and the behavior stops.

I don't know why. But I've already lost a day and a half on this, so I've got to actually get some work done. There is more strangeness, though. Before the total wipe (yes, including registry stragglers)/reinstall, my timeline zoom would reset about a half second after the track started playing. Now, it resets AFTER the track is paused/stopped. I really hope all of this is of some value to anyone else who winds up here googling that infuriating zoom reset behavior. I would not have guessed this Boris thing. As I said, it wasn't even actively doing any panning or zooming, just sitting there in the Media FX chain.

Thanks again you guys for all feedback and the assurance that it didn't have to be that way

EDIT: Crap. Not fixed. With the Boris effect it fails every time. Without it, it's just erratic. When you actually start to add/move keyframes, it gets wonky again. No more ideas at this point...

    Cat,
if you have focus on P&C window timeline /keyframe controller, you can use left/right arrows to (kind of) play/preview video there. Also up/down arrows to zoom the scrollbar. Not what you're looking for, but maybe worth a mention.
