Thread: Cant open project file "An error occurred"

Hi, so Im using Vegas Movie studio platinum 9.0 and I rendered a project (widescreen and HQ for youtube) last night but it came out very choppy (mostly by the transitions/fading between clips).. So I decided to try and render it again but now the project file wont open at all.

Any other project files open just fine except this one. While opening it freezes and the pop up says: An error occurred during the current operation. An exception has occured.

If I click OK the program shuts down, and if I click details it gives me this:

I tried opening it in another vegas program (pro9) and it opens but only as one file and pretty damaged. I also tried opening the back up file but it gave the same error.

Any help with this? Thank you

I reckon you need to put a support ticket in to Sony. That might as well be in a secret code for most people!

Archie's right. However I'd take a look at the media. Do any of the other projects that open OK use the same clips? In particular I suspect we're looking for a problem with an MP4 clips as the faulting module is called "'mcmp4plug.dll" (which I'd bet this Friday's lunch on is something to do with MainConcept Mpeg 4)

How this helps I don't know, but you could open a new project and start adding the same media to it and see whether that helps narrow it down.

Hmm, no I dont have any other projects with the same clips.. I did try to open a couple of mp4 files yesterday though so they're probably still under 'project media'.

Though I decided to just use the slightly choppy video in the end. And hopefully no other projects will encounter the same problem!

Hmmm. But you DO have a problem you haven't solved. If it's a corrupt clip - then no problem, but if its anything else, you can be your bottom dollar it'll come back to bite you just when you don't need it.

If your source clip is more than 2 GB, that's a problem for Sony, and it will produce the sort of error you received. Go to a different software, and split your clip so each part is less than 2 GB.

Firstly I note that right at the start there is a call-out to a MCXXX.DLL - this could be an attempt by your s/w to call up a MainConcept process. MC processes are licensed to SONY and we all need to be fully registered with SONY for that same MC licence to trickle to us. Have you completed your registration of your s/w? Have you?

Oh really? First I've heard of it? I really do mean it. I've import 10s of gigs of video into Vegas?

Why? Never heard of this? Is this for a particualr format of file?

I have Sony Platinum Pro 9 and can't open any MPEG-4 file larger than 2.0 GB. I contacted Sony support (who were very helpful, BTW). They told me it's a known problem apparently caused by having certain versions of Quicktime also loaded.

One has to ask why would anybody have more than one QT installed? Is it possible? How about uninstalling one of the QT installs? Or is that too obvious?

I believe you misunderstood what I said. I was told certain versions of QT can cause the problem. I had a single copy of one of those versions on my pc. Uninstalling it didn't help. I eventually split the 2+ GB files using my camcorder editing software, and was then able to work with a split file in Sony. The 2 GB problem doesn't exist in Pro 8, apparently. Just Pro 9.
