Sony Vegas and Media Studio Yep, I know they're not related, but they both fall in the Premiere Alternative bracket in my humble opinion! Post here for Ulead Media Studio or Vegas video problems or pointers...

Default Canon 7D Editing / Rendering Issues

Ok so my mate just bought a Canon 7D and as beautiful as the footage is, we are having MAJOR problems rendering our projects using Vegas.

A couple of facts that should be considered: the raw footage is shot in 720p but at 50fps (pal).

On average a 20 second clip is around the 100gb mark and my AMD 3.2ghz Dual Core / 4 GB Ram / 512mb G Card PC takes a massive dump when trying to render. We are getting the "Low Memory" popup.. NO GO.

We have tried several different formats to no avail, I can render a 20second single clip no problem but any 3min+ projects are not rendering at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What are your Project Settings?

Have you requested that the render should reflect your Project settings?

You need to supply this information.

100Gb for 20 seconds that seem very large did you mean 100Mb ? My camera records DVCProHD 720p and I get about 30 mins on 32Gb memory card.

Its normal the file is not to the nice spec of AVCHD, I had the same with my Sony Vegas editing wish crashes, most now convert to a more friendly format, thus making it usable

shot on 5D and sound via Zoom H2

here is is completed

I was also getting 'Low Memory' issues when putting 7d files onto the timeline (using Movie Studio 9). Converting them to AVI files with Neo Scene solved the problem.

You won't want to edit with Native Canon EOS 7D MOV files, most CPU's bottleneck when scrubbing through these files on a timeline. It's very CPU intensive and not really meant for editing. Do you have access to Adobe Media Encoder? If so that'll help you to convert your files to another friendlier format.

If you don't mind spending a few $, then look into Cineform Neoscene. This is an awesome 4:2:2 codec that's much less processor intensive on NLE's. You'd actually be upgrading the color sampling since the 7D records 4:1:1.

Quality won't improve but it's better to work with and it's rock solid, small, easy to install and batch convert. Powerful little program. I used to use it all the time when working with Premiere Pro, but I'm now back to one converter which converts the MOV files on import.
