New Video User Needing Help

Hi,

I just recorded all 60 of our super8 home videos onto mini-DV's. I now want to use Ulead to make files that I will eventually burn to DVD's. I am overwhelmed by all the options. Should I make Mpeg's, WMV's, or AVI's? What should my bit rate be? I tried making a one-minute AVI and it was 66 Megs. That seems really big!

Please advise.

Welcome to the forums Vanessa.

You are best placed to capture in lossless DVI settings. This is especially true of cone film transferred to VHS as you wouldn't want to further degrade the quality.

Once captured you should then set your ULead project settings to DVD compliant Mpeg. Set this at 8000kbps variable. If you would likea detialed walk through on this please post back.

Detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated.

I have Ulead VideoStudio 7. When I go to the capture screen it has a drop down format menu where I can shoose MPEG or DVD. Which one should I choose?

Each movie is about 3 minutes. What should I expect the final size of each one to be approximately?

Unfortunately I don't have version 7. Bu the post below refers to the correct capture settings in version 8 and includes a screen dump hakfway through. I think you will just have to find the equivalent in v7.

I set my project settings (File > Project Settings in v

to MPEG, PAL DVD Compression and VARIABLE bit rate of 8000kbps. At this rate I get 60 minutes of excellent quality video to each DVD.

Your AVI capture will take about 1Gb for every four minutes. Your output files will be a lot less than that. So you should get about 20 of your 3 minute movies on a DVD at best quality.

I'll do a bit of digging to see if I can find the exact menu sequence for v7

Thanks so much for your help! I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of this. I am giving these to my mom for her bday. We have been meaning to do it for 20 years and I want to do it right.

You are more than welcome Vanessa. Just before you start the capture process though, I would recommend that you defrag your hard disk. Thsi will minimise the chances of dropped frames.

Incidentally I transferred some cine film for a friend recently, and they were simply over the moon. The days of lugging out the old projector were gone for them and they were really pleased to be able to see their films again.

Sorry to bug again so soon, but I have another question.

Under Project Properties, File Format, the first link you gave me uses Microsoft AVI files and the second link uses MPG. Which should I use again?

For Project Properties use MPG (In version 8 they have changed this to MPEG).
