Sony Vegas and Media Studio Yep, I know they're not related, but they both fall in the Premiere Alternative bracket in my humble opinion! Post here for Ulead Media Studio or Vegas video problems or pointers...

Default Rendering in sony vegas!?

Im editing a couple of small movies taken with a camera phone, adding some transitions and stuff between scenes and stuff. the problem is when I get to the rendering of the thing! Ive tried with mpeg, divx, xvid and h264, but the result is always crappy! The result always come out over exposed and kinda choppy with artifacts, not looking like the original video quality at all (if you can call it quality)!

Especially avi shows a lot of artifact (lines when there is movement), and somehow the setting I specify wont stick, if i set a bitrate of 128, it comes out with 2000-3000 and the framesize and aspect ratio is teasing as well!

How should I go about getting a similar quality to the original video!?

Rendering to wmv or dvix you need to use a bit rate of about 1mbit/sec.

However - some artifacts may still occur - video from phones can do weird things in editors.

Possibly the cause is the original dimensions of the video. If you're rendering up to full screen from perhaps a 320x240 original it will look crap no matter what you do...

Well its a bunch of standard 176x144px 3gp files, and im not trying to upscale or anything, because its not likely that the quality will improve a whole lot. I just want to throw in a couple of transitions, maybe some text and then have it look fairly like the original, same dimensions and all after rendering.

Im thinking about using mpeg.

As it has been said other times, you can't improve on quality that isn't there to begin with. If the videos are 176x144 to start with, anything higher res than that will looks pretty bad, I think.

I love Vegas, but I have a friend who does a lot of work with camera phone video and he has found that the only thing that works for him is, shockingly, Windows Movie Maker. I have seen his output and it looks great when edited in WMM.

As long as it's rendered out at the same dimensions?

I made a few screens of different renderings just for the heck of it

The first is the original 3gp file.

The second is a Divx I made in avidemux, it looks pretty much like the original, same dimentions and bitrate. Thats what I want!

The third is a avi I rendred in vegas, for some reason it insist on puttin black bars at top and butom, making the picture look a bt squeezed! Also it refuse to render with the bitrate I specify, im telling it to use a bitrate of 128, but the out put comes out with a bitrate of 1700+!? its also a lot more blurry and choppy than the one I made in avidemux!?

The last is a mpeg I rendered in vegas as well, it insists on putting bars at the sides, but at least it dont make the picture look wrong! Also it seems to be somewhat brighter that the original!?

So why cant I get it to look like the one I made in avidemux when rendring with vegas?
