I have a 15MB video file that I want to seperate into 3 x 5MB clips. is this possible with Vegas?
I have experimented with it but the only method I can find is by hilighting a section and rendering to a new track but that just creates a new file with a larger filesize.
Any advice?

There are two things going on here.
Rendering to a new track is not particularly helpful. You just want to render the selection to a file.
The other thing is that the size of the resultant file will depend entirely on what format you are rendieing in.
For example, if your imported 15MB file is low resolution wmv but your render it as uncompressed AVI, the file will be much, much, much, bigger (note it will not be better quality just much higher resolution low quality)
So, you need to do the following:
1. Establish the codecs, file type, resolution etc of your source.
2. Set your project settings to match
3. Make your selection on the timeline
4. Render - and set all your render settings to match the source. (and make sure the "render selection only" bock is ticked.

I'm a little (read a lot) confused.
1. where/how can i check the codecs and resolution of the file?
2. I dont know how to do this
3. I think that I can do this ok
4. Is it - file, render as..?
Sorry for bothering you with some more questions, I am muddling my way through vegas but really dont have much knowledge of it.

Edit: so is it not possible to just delete say 1 minute of footage from the file without rendering it?

Yes and no. You need to go through the method above (or a similar one). In practice, if the settings are the same throughout (ie souce, project and output)
Vegas doesn't actually have to do very much-it's just copying bytes and the words "No Recompression Required" appear in the preview window when rendering - and it's very quick.
