Used G-Spot, thank you for that suggestion by the way, and it says it is using the AC3 codec for the audio. So now what do I do? I wouldn't mind splitting the video and audio and recombining in Vegas...

OK, so there's the issue right there! Hmmm... this is outside my comfort zone. My initial thoughts are for you to get the original "footage" captured and passed into a format you CAN use, using another format/template that doesn't produce the AC-3 stream. Hmmm..... Try SUPER: SUPER © . . I use this for file re-render/conversion, but I haven't tried it to produce a file that would allow conversion of AC-3 for importation into Vegas. Another package I have heard used is Womble. Again, I have had no experience of it.
Just a thought, have you attempted to import this into something simple like MS Movie Maker? If you can play it in Windows Media Player I'm wondering also if you could import into Windows Encoder and try that path?
But yes, we have established the area that needs your attention.
Best regards
Grazie

Grazie, are you saying Vegas will not import AC3 files (even though it will create them)?
I've asked this question before on this board and not had a definitive answer and hence assumed it's something to do with my system. I can't believe that a DVD I've created in Vegas cannot be re-imported.

Hi Tim. Don't take my word for it. Go to the main Forum and do further searches. Also, do you see AC-3 as being one of the formats Vegas will import? I don't.

Nope. Your system will be fine.

Ah! Now THAT'S another bag of mackeral . . .
1] Do, do "believe" that you can't import AC-3. Now that aint the same as importing a previously created DVDA DVD which has used AC-3 as the audio stream for the creation/authoring of a DVD in DVDA. And to confirm this -AGAIN - I just repeated the process of importing one of my own DVDA DVDs which was created USING AC-3.
2] And yes you CAN import a DVDA DVD disc. You know the drill on this one!
So, what ever is happening to allow us to import from a previously created DVDA DVD using AC-3 and to get the audio, is NOT the same process as importing an AC-3 file.
Go figure!!

So, this still leaves our friend here without a solution.
I'm wondering if he could recapture to the SONY and then plug the Sony into Vegas and see if it connected? OR, is it a SONY DVD Camcorder disc? Now if THAT was the case, then the import DVD Camcorder disc would do it. Hence my question? But he said an SD .. . eh?
There has to be a way to do this. It's nutz to think you can video and not be able to edit!!
We need more info from our friend.

First, Grazie, thank you so much. Your insight has been invaluable, and you have kept me from returning the entire camera and getting a different one.
I am processing it through SUPER right now, I will post back with results. It just really makes me curious, why can something as simple as Windows Media Player play the file with no problems, while something as advanced and powerful as Vegas says there is no audio even! As for Windows Movie Maker, trying to open the file with that program will crash the entire program. It will however open any other video file not from this camcorder.

That is solely your decision. And you STILL haven't informed us what camera it is?

Nor, indeed, whether you have updated to version 6d of Vegas - looking at the release notes it appears 6c & 6d had quite a few improvements as to which file types it would work with.
Interesting that you mention MOD files - I've always associated these more with JVC cams. My guess is the camera is a DCR HDx of some flavour - in which case it's High Def and Vegas 6 definitely had problems in it's earlier incarnations.

I merely meant that without your assistance, I would have probably given up.
And in the first post, Canon FS100. It is a flash memory (SD memory) camcorder.
No, I have not upgraded to 6.0d.
