Say I've got one clip. Someone moving towards me, doing something, then moving away. And I want the moving towards me part fast, the doing something part in slow mo, and the moving away part fast again, would I have to split the clip into 3 and edit their velocities separately, or is there some other way of doing this?

One salient "tip" - once done, make sure you are showing the CORRECT Event length, meaning ALL of the Event. Reason: As we apply VeloEnvels we are, in essence, changing the overall time-space of that Event. As this is true we must make sure that ALL the Event length is now being displayed correctly.
So, what we need to do is: EITHER, if the not ALL the Event is being revealed, grab the end of the event and pull to the right ( or from the front and pull to the left) . . . OR if you see the event literally repeating ( 'cos now we have altered it so much that it actually contains/dictates LESS of the Event timespace) fold-back the Event to its repeat "Notch". And again, you can do this from the IN or from the OUT of the Event.

Nevermind though, I've figured it out. You double click the velocity line.
