Sony Vegas and Media Studio Yep, I know they're not related, but they both fall in the Premiere Alternative bracket in my humble opinion! Post here for Ulead Media Studio or Vegas video problems or pointers...

I am 90% certain that masking is not available in movie studio - only in the full version of vegas.

Sony Creative Software - Vegas Pro 8 - Vegas Family Comparison

Yes you can upgrade.

Vegas Pro is about 8 times the cost of Movie Studio, but upgrading works out cheaper

That's true, but I bet that 95% of what you actually do in VP you could do quite happily in VMS. VMS is a great product and vastly superior (in my opinion) to the equivalent Pinnacle/Adobe packages.

Yes - I think it is the best 'value ' editor - along with the free xp one.

And my last one used 27. But the point is if I couldn't afford VP, with a bit of planning and a bit of imagination I could have done it with four and lots of intermediate renders.

It all depends on your priorities. If you've got no money but loads of time (eg students) then VMS will do much of what you need to do. If you're a pro the cost of VP is insignificant comapred to the opportunity cost of your time. If you're just a hobbyist with wife & kids demanding your time and no money you just have to bite the bullet, buy Pro and hope the missus doesn't see you credit card bill
