Sony Vegas and Media Studio Yep, I know they're not related, but they both fall in the Premiere Alternative bracket in my humble opinion! Post here for Ulead Media Studio or Vegas video problems or pointers...

You most certainly can (at least in VMS6)
Video on lower track.
Mask on track above (white is the are you want to show through, black is the area you don't want to show, greys are in between)
Hover over the green icon at the right hand side of the track header of the "mask" track - it'll say "Compositing mode" - click and select "Mask"
Job done.
Enough info for you to be getting on with?

Actually, no. Forgive me but I really do not understand. I want to mask out portions of an image. A trial of a program I once used had it in the pan/crop and I could outline the image I wanted to keep and so on. Is that like what you're suggesting?

The Pan/Crop in Vegas Pro has the facility to create an irregular shaped mask using bezier curves - this may be what you downloaded previously - or something similar.
With Studio, you can use pan/crop to create a basic mask (rectangular), but this is pretty limited.
What you can do is to create a mask in photoshop/paintshop or anything you like. The bits you want to show should be white and the bits you want hidden black.
For example, create a png or jpg with a white triangle on a black background.
Place this image on a track above the video you want to mask.
Change the compositing mode of the MASK track (ie the one with the image) to "multiply (mask)"
Now your video will appear in a triangle only.
