Okay, here goes -
What I want to do is cut a scene from a DVD movie and edit an object into it. The gist of the scene is that the characters are holding a cylinder in their hands and I would like to replace the cylinder with a soda can.
First, what file format should I convert the scene into in order to import it into vegas?
Secondly, how exactly do I go about editing the soda can in place of the cyndlirical object? Preferrably I would like to make it look as convincing as possible.
Thanks in advance!

Befor i waffle on - how 'nwbie' are you. DOes chromakey or mask mean much to you, or key frames?
I ask so I can put helpful info in the answer.
To do this convincingly is not easy.

Chromakey is like green screen, right? And I've used masks and keyframe animation when making flash animations, are they the same? Preferrably I would not like to have to edit it frama by frame.. even if it's not convincing it would be okay: it's going to be a joke anyways.

Get a still of the can.
Either with a coloured background that can be chromakeyed out or cut around it to create a mask.
Put that on the topmost track.
Next track has the video. Then, the fiddly bit, add track motion keyframes to the can track so that the can follows the cyliner.
Also use the track motion on the can to get the size right.
Enough detail?
