Me again guys.....sorry to butt in, but I did start this thread after all
I rendered my movie, following your instructions (I used the mpeg2 format for the render although I didn't batch render separate video and audio, I just did it all in one go) - I burnt the result to dvd using DVD Architect. The results weren't bad, although generally, the footage seemed to be slightly "soft-focusy" - particularly well-lit faces seen from afar seemed to lose a little detail (the movie mostly involves concert footage, with performers' faces under concert lighting). These were a lot sharper on the original camera footage. Or is this just the normal quality loss you'd expect following a render?
Also, I've just noticed that my camera shoots mpeg files with a framerate of 25 fps. My Vegas project was set to 29.970 fps. Should I have had it set to match the mpeg files i used in the project (25 fps, using the PAL DV template)?
Any advice?

Well, once I've imported the camera clips into the computer, they're in mpeg format, is what I mean.

Ah - a hard disk camera.
Now I understand why they are MPEG files. I thought for a minute there that you were converting DV AVI files to MPEG2 prior to editing.
(A crazy thought, I know, but it's amazing what some people get up to....)

So Bert, can you advise me on any of my original questions? I take it I'm already at a disadvantage, in having only mpeg files to work with instead of AVI |

I've never used Vegas so cannot give you any specific advice.
Yes, by now you have realised that MPEG2 is a pig to edit.
By the sounds of it, Vegas seems to be able to import the footage OK, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten as far as you have.
You ended up with a fairly 'fluffy' looking DVD, I gather. I think that this is due to a combination of reasons.
Firstly, the footage recorded to the camera's hard drive would, due its compression, already look a bit fluffy compared to DV AVI. When you author the DVD, I suspect Architect re-encodes your timeline again to MPEG2, making a fluffy picture even fluffier.
Short of ensuring that Architect authors to the highest quality settings available to it (however that's done...), I think you may be stuck with what you have got.
Sorry I can't help further.
(Personally, i think that HDD and DVD camcorders should carry a statutory warning re. editing incompatibilty)

Thanks Bert.
Pre-editing, the files didn't look fluffy, but what you're saying makes perfect sense. MPEG2 = compressed video. Ah well, no news is good news eh? You live and learn
Right.....where did I put that camcorder.......???
(Crassshhh!!!)
