I've tried editing many what I would call video 'fragments' that is WMVs from here, MPEGS from there, and the only DivX over the top and the end result - nothing! Vegas refuses to display XVid video for me, just audio (well I've never actually installed the DivX or XVid codec but it works fine for me in WMP11) The MPEG and WMV fragments also seem to mess it up - but I suppose re-editing compressed and rendered footage is always worse.
If possible I'd convert everything to DV - maybe virtual dub can help. Sure, this will take time and hdd space, but should help

Converting everything to dv is a good fix. You can usually edit most divx if you install a divx codec, xvids are rarely editable.

That'll be it then - I've only got XVids. Apparently XVids are better compressed than DivX but not sure if that's anything to do with it

What makes you say this Mark? Xvid and DivX are not only accronyms of each other, but they're also essentially both MPEG4 codecs. In fact you don't even need DivX installed to view DivX encoded videos. FFDSHOW can be used to decode the video, and is less CPU intensive. Installing this and getting rid of all the other junk would probably improve performance. I would suggest you bin DivX.

I have often had trouble with xvids on my timeline, never really discovered why, looks like a specific problem to my system. To tell the truth I havent really tried to edit xvids for some time - just sort of gave up - they might even work on my new set up - probebly havent tried yet.
May be best to disregard my advice above.

Im not really a DivX fan either - I have just XVids - but when I try to import into Vegas only the audio shows. Is there any way Mark (either one!) to easily fix this or to DV-erise it quickly?
