im using vegas 7 and when i try to remove the sound from the video, it deletes the video aswell. i am sure this is something simple but i cant think what!

Theres a small open padlock icon at the top of your screen -"Ignore Event Grouping". Click on it and you will seperate video/audio grouping.

Another thing that is usefull here is making and removing things from groups.

Right click on a bit of video and down the bottom of the menu you can see group, you can create and remove things, very usefull.

If you use the selection edit tool (arrow) to select a number of bits of video, sound, events and then use 'create new' in groups all that you had selected is treated as one chunk and all movew together.

I was hoping for more group power in vegas - like maybe a group effects facility.
