0 Videos nominated Video Of the Month(s): 0 | | Big deinterlacing (I think) problems
I took footage of my mates wedding using two cameras, a Sony DCR-HC24 and a HDV-FX1. The footage from the FX1 came out fine but the footage from the HC24 was badly lined when any movement was apparent.
I have tried different deinterlace settings (Vegas 6) and nothing seems to make things any better. The problem appears in good light as well.
I am using PAL DV at 25fps. I am stumped and looking for advice.
Looking forward to your opinions.

I may be wrong, but if you are going to burn the video for playing on a DVD player and regular TV then you won't have to bugger about de-interlacing as Tv work on the interlace method. I may be wrong and if someone here can clarify it would be appreciated. Most of my footage being viewed on the computer shows the mice teeth but when shown on TV is fine.

Yep Yeebsy. BUT If you want to take stills from the video make sure you take them as 'progressive' otherwise they will jitter like mad on your TV.

Is this the problem?
Vertical edges of moving objects on the screen have a comb-like edge to them. This seems to occur even with slow moving objects? If so I've been looking for a solution to this for a couple of months.
My stepsone had a video of steam trains, one shot of which would have mad a good still. No matter how we treated this (de-interlace, swap upper/lower frames etc) we could NOT get rid of the jagged edges.
More recently I thought I'd try livening up some single camera footage of speeches at a wedding by using pan & crop. The cropped image (about 30% in area of the original) showed these comb-like edges very clearly and the resultant footage unusable. The original footage was PAL widescreen (standard definition) captured using the supplies Sony VidCap progam. I render using "Best" quality. DV-avi, MPEG-2 makes no difference. The problems is still there.
It has been suggested that the Sony VidCap is the culprit, but I haven't seen any real complaints by others.
I do know I'm not the only person experiencing this problem and I'm somewhat surprised I haven't seen this problem mentioned regularly in Vegus forums.
This leads me to believe either the solution is SO obvious I can't see it or very few people experience this.

Ye, Tim this is the same problem. First thing, what is you final output going to be on. I.e. Computer or DVD/TV? if you are only wanting to run it on computer you could de-interlace it through 'Virtualdub'.

I'm editing to view on DVD/TV. I'm not convinced de-interlace is the solution though as I ran it through the de-interlace filter (I think there's one in Vegas?, if not it would have been VirtualDub) and this had no effect (at least on the preview)

Preview in vegas does not apply the deinterlace filter, the changes are only visible in good or best.
When selcting the deinteralce filter 'blend' seems to give the smoothest result but can produce ghositng on moving parts of the image and looks more blurry, loses more vertical res then 'interpolate', thats what i usually use, but interpolate increases render time more.
Also,
When cropping or using track motion to zoom in it is essential to use deinteralce even when the video will be distributed via dvd for tv as the fields in the interlaced image will be 'wrong' for the tv.
There are some add on intelligent deinteralce filters for vdub that can deinterlace only the moving parts of the image to avoid resoloution loss in non moving areas... rahter unhelpfully i have forgotten the name of them but i had them on my old pc, anyway using them is a lot of hassle with long render times so i experimented with them but didnt find the gains worth the hassle, I just use the deinterlace in vegas.
I think it was mentioned above but if the output is only for dvd / tv and there is no cropping then the ouput will look better laced.
Aslo, remember that deinterlacing footage can make motion 'jerky' as the laced frames smooth things, this can be especially apparent on pans.

Thank you, Mark, thank you.
I've experimented a bit now and understand what you're getting at.
My only problem now is if I'm only outputting for DVD/TV but want to crop can I mix the two ie split the project into separate avis for the cropped bits and the non cropped, deinterlace only the cropped bits, then stick them all together in a new project and rendering that as interlaced? If my understanding is correct, the interlaced bits will remain interlaced throughout (camera, captured avi, split avis and final avi) wheras the cropped bits will be de-interlaced before cropping when editing the "split avis"
A) is this possible?
B) if so, would the difference in "look" between the bits that have been de-interlaced and the bits that haven't be noticable?
