One of the most frequent questions raised in the video forums is how to edit video from a DVD. With the increasing popularity and falling cost of standalone DVD recorders, the desire to edit home movies recorded on DVD is growing. DVD camcorders and the ability to transfer analogue footage to DVD via a standalone recorder is also creating demand for an easy solution to DVD editing.

I'm an Adobe Premiere user. Always have been. And after hours of frustration, head scratching and yet more frustration, I'm finally begining to master its finer points - and it'll take something special to prise me away from Premiere Pro. I've never really considered using another editing application, but the recent release of Vegas Video 4 and the aquistion of its creators by Sony, I decided to check out this young pretender. Sitting in exactly the same price bracket as Premiere, it's only fitting to make comparisons. But I'l try and put my Premiere preconceptions aside and concentrate on what Vegas Video can do. And if the rumours are true, it may just be a Premiere beater.

It's not too much of a generalisation to lump video editing applications into two distinct product areas - low end applications offering wizard based editing and production, clearly seperated from more sophisticated, semi-professional applications offering enough features to create a Hollywood movie (well, almost). Despite a craze for minimalism in low end applications (Windows Movie Maker being a stirling example), Pure Motion's EditStudio bucks this trend. With "timeline" rather than story-board editing the default layout - the latter being synominous with budget applications - Edit Studio clearly marks its intentions. Advanced features typically restricted to packages twenty times the price (such as Picture in Picture) are also offered, So how does Edit Stuideo compare to its budget rivals... Price seems to be main selling point, but is this where the story ends? In typical Digital Director fashion, we judge this application from the beginner's eye.

You’ve got the digital camcorder, you've invested in a firewire card and you've bought the appropriate cables. You're simply itching to get started on Editing those hours offootage, but can’t decide what budget editing package to plump for. Would ULead’s Video Studio 8 fit the bill? Lets find out. First of all connect your DV Cam to the PC using the firewire cable and set the camera to PLAY/VCR. This last BSOD sent me over the edge. I embarked on a search for better editing software. Looked at Pinnacle, didn't like the reviews and gripes I read on http://www.videohelp.com. Adobe's prices shocked me into stillness. Sony's stuff seemed to be in the same boat. Then I found Magix had a video editor....

I'd splashed out on a matrox Rt.x100 for real time rendering of SD footage, so was sceptical that software only would be able to edit HD in real time. But it does and does exactly what it says on the box.

Get the lowdown on the most popular DVD copy software Despite ever multiplying speed cameras, everyone breaks the speed limit. Whatever your motivation, and whatever you call it, copying DVDs has never been so easy.

Adobe is undoubtedly king of the PC prosumer video editing market with its ever evolving Premiere series. Now on Premiere Pro 1.5, this popular editor is complimented by the equally powerful Adobe Encore and combining these two products makes a home PC into a powerful and sophisticated video editing machine. Despite its popular appeal, Premiere Pro was never designed as a beginners application: its often unforgiving to the casual user and represents a serious investment in terms of initial outlay and the time required to master. Despite this, beginners are often attracted to Adobe's pedigree, background and end user support. What if Adobe took advantage of this burgeoning beginners market, stripped Premiere down and included the basic tools of Adobe Encore. My friend, you'd be looking at Adobe Premiere Elements. Adobe Premiere Elements is Adobe's first step into the lower end of the video editing market. So just how does it stand up in this highly competitive market?
