Default Planning for documentary

I haven't made a documentary in about a year and am feeling a little rusty. Anyone mind reviewing the steps they take before they actually start shooting and editing their documentary. Thanks in advance to all those who do comment and reply.

my bible, well one of my bibles, is ' directing the documenatry' by Rabiger.

Do what he says !

Passion, preperation and persistence is how i would sum it up.

Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the recommendation (Im looking into getting that). In the mean time, any specific steps I should take? Also, what is your procedure for brainstorming ideas. Do you sit out one day and plan it? Do you gradually jot things down as they come to you?

I think one of the most important things is that your are passionate about your subject and narrative whatever it may be.

I hesitate to offer much more practical advice as all my stuff is bish bash bosh rather than planned and researched.
