Besides the perception that someone with a camera may be a perv, there is also the perception that someone with a camera could be a terrorist scouting for an attack. Here in Kuwait authorities recently arrested some people for filming outside an oil refinery. Many Government buildings and even some shopping centers have big signs saying that photography is prohibited. In the nearly two years I have been working here I have done no location shooting, even in places where no warnings are clearly posted, for fear that some Ministry of Interior officer will seize me and my camera. I don't speak their language and don't want to tangle with a legal system where people are presummed guilty until proven innocent.
And besides the two perceptions mentioned above there is an even more dangerous mis-perception: That you may be a member of the Press. Press photogs are free game in many countries. Huumm...perhaps that is not a bad thing - smile.

Happens to me loads so i tht it deserved a thread to discuss more.
Some of my recent expiriences...
The good - Asked the police about guns and filming and they were very helpful about giving me advice and said stuff in public likely to be cool so long as agreed with them.
The bad - told by a security person to stop filming an office block cos of 'government computers' - I kid you not.
And The ugly - Turned up on a paid job to film this semi pro foot baller ( age 16) at a match for his own use. Coach accused me of being a pedo ! ! ! |
I hope you looked at the coach with a very straight and serious face, saying "As my professional life means that I have to work with children, that is a very serious, un founded allegation and as such I will be sueing you for defamation of character" (I think it's only Slander rather than the more lucrative Libel, but defamation all the same). Wouldn't be worth actually doing it, but might have scared the **** out of him.

Blast, just remembered that he can say what he likes to you / me, a third party needs to have heard it for it to be defamation. Oh well, might still have taken him down a peg or two.

I personally find that the...
"Huh? I can see nothing sexual about this situation at all. If YOU find something sexual about it then I suggest that you seek therapy."
...approach works well. My missus had an installation where images of swimmers were projected on the windows of a huge civic centre, including images of kids swimming (in swimming cozzies obviously) and the only person who complained was... a passing CofE vicar. To me that says a lot more about his mental processes than anything else.

I think i just said I was offended and that he was undermining the industry of one of his charges. It was annoyiing cos my proper job is a nirse and I am police checked every year but sadly they dont give us a copy - would have been just the thing.
The kid offered to pay me anyway, but I turned him down.

This from the uk film council - UK Film Council - Filming in public spaces
_______________
Advice about permission and Rights clearances
If you film an actor inside a store or restaurant – you need written permission to use the location and also to show the chain's name or trademark.
If you film outside a store or restaurant you do not need permission to show its name or trademark – however, if the location chosen is used to communicate a negative message in your film (for example, a film about 'poisoned restaurant food') you may risk legal proceedings.
You do not need to ask passers-by for permission to feature their faces in a film. Under UK law, the copyright of film shot in a public place resides with the filmmaker.

It happened again! http://www.zaskarfilms.com/Films/Temp/sopfilming.wmv
I was going to let off my suicide belt but R got all diplomatic on me. We were filming in a fucking public plaza ffs!
This really annoys me - it's like some grey suffocating insideous censorship from the bottom up.

So was she telling you you needed permission to film in Millennium Square? I thought that was a public space!!
Who was she? What organisation did she purport to represent?

She came out of that museum bit whatever its called - took her about ten seconds to pounce - ridiculous - suffice to say me a rhianna are going back there precisely cos she tried to stop us - and this time I will argue and keep the camera rolling - I am thinking of making a film just about being asked to stop filming - should be very funny.

This makes for a very interesting read, we need to be more aware of our rights with a camera in our hand. But it's sensible to understand peoples concerns and to a degree humour their mis-understandings. I think it's all about the balance.
