Default Sources of Royalty Free Satellite/Maps?

Not sure if this is the best forum to post - happy to be advised if otherwise.
Are there any reasonable sources of satellite images and/or maps that I can use in non-commercial films free-of-charge? Whilst these films are strictly amateur, they may be shown at public events such as amateur film festivals or my local video/filmmakers club so it's not quite the same as "oh it's a family video so no-one is really going to care" (an attitude I object to as a matter of principle anyway)

That's where I started. After half an hour of trying to decipher their guff, I gave up and posted the question here. It also appears that much of the Google Maps material is provided by third parties where the guff gets even more unfathomable.

However, Mark, thanks for introducing me to the word guff, which I shall attempt to use as many times as possible during the course of the day. I'm doing quite well already

Re: the maps, the only recourse here is to drop an email to Google. They are normally quite good at replying - even if it is an automated message!

My experience has been that all major sites and companies have restrictions on the use of maps and images. Ironically, I was able to find amatuer reproductions of solar system planets maps easier than I was able to find local maps for Earth. Perhaps a library might have something that can be used? I don't know if a community like stock xchng would have anything but they might be worth a shot (sxc.hu).
