Default confused avi, codec so on

I understand i need a not compress file to capture in order to edit a movie, i suppose to this file should be .AVI but when i setup this start my confusion;

if avi is a not compress file why i need to select for example YUY2 or mpeg2 for Avi file?

Is ok to capture a file with mpeg2 instead AVI?

If i need to create a DVD, is a good idea to capture a file with Mpeg2 because DVD is mpeg2 too?

please some one let me a hand in order to understand my confusion

Capture into DV format if you want to edit, or directly into MPEG-2 if you'll burn to DVD without editing.

AVI is just a container, not a format. DV files are indeed captured as AVI. The DVD image size is 720x576 (PAL) / 720x480 (NTSC aka US standard), stick to that if you want the best quality. Capture directly into that size.
