AVI file corrupted

Two avi files captured with Pinnacle 9 QS Promo were corrupted during editing. Video channel is OK, but sound 95% missing. However, the avi file can be played successfully using Windows Media Player.
Have tried to edit in Pinnacle 10, Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 and Windows Movie Maker without success.
Question - how can I recover the audio in order to edit it?
Note: Pinnacle 9 has been uninstalled, the registry purged and the program re-installed; it is working with newly captured material
