The pro photographer’s lot is the formal stuff. The hassle of groups, family portraits, and all the ‘necessary’ album shots are his and his alone.
But the candid stuff has a value all its own – very often superior, because it catches mood, spontaneity, and much more of the informal cheer. The unposed shots are a closer depiction of the reality of a happy occasion.
Ask most couples. The pro’s formal shots amount to ‘record photography’. But the guy who shoots the candids is unique, unrestricted, able to adjust and adapt on the spot, and rely on his instincts for capturing the moment.
I also think your wedding vids show great flair, Marc (not lens flare). You have a rapport with the couple and guests that comes across, a knack gained from experience, not formal training.
Archie123 – I think the niche that Marc, purejammy and their peers occupy is not to emulate what the pro videographer does – but to complement and augment it.

When first viewing this post I downloaded the montage and thought how pleasing.
After reading the above critique I thought perhaps I'd missed something so downloaded and viewed again.
Believe me, all brides will be delighted with their videos from you if they receive the same quality as in the sample.
Scorceses dolly's and Spielbergs jibs would inevitably have made some of the footage steadier but would also have made it impossible to capture the one offs that make these wedding videos so memorable.
Marc, don't be disheartened by critiques, what I've seen is charming and will be relished forever

Wow got tongues wagging here then lol Look if your going to Pimp the Link then expect people to look at it. There are a couple of replies about the design of the site but because Marc’s not selling web design services we have had no comments about one-upmanship and point scoring.
So lets take a look one at a time “because we weren't going to be told what to do or where to stand by some guy that thought he knew what was best for us” Bet the Vicar told you where to stand !!! You seem to tar Photographs and Video with the same brush. Photographers take a still of time and do push you about to get the best shots to tell the story of the day. A good Cameraman can capture the day and tell a beautiful story without been obtrusive.
“Archie123 – I think the niche that Marc, purejammy and their peers occupy is not to emulate what the pro videographer does – but to complement and augment it.”
Well I am sorry but if you charge a fee then you are classed as a professional and should offer a professional service / end product be covered by a licence for church recordings and public liabilities insurance. A contract between you and the customer of what you are going to supply, with a waver section to cover mechanical breakdown ( although you should have a spare camera ) weather conditions etc .
“Prove how good you are by telling us what you would have done, not what you
wouldn't have done.”
Here we go then neck on the line, Always go the rehearsal Talk with the Vicar about how you would like to film the service , be prepared not to get your own way
Remember about sound try and mic up the groom wherever possible ( radio ) for the big day but remember to turn off when not needed you cant believe what some new husbands say to there new wives. Anyway back to the rehearsal, plan with the Vicar where you are putting your tripod, enter and exit points , plan and write down the important shots you need. Also a good time to get some cut away shots of the church. Take a few candid shots now of them getting things wrong and a quick interview of how the wedding is coming together and their feelings as the big day approaches. Before the big day ring the photographer and introduce yourself and talk about working with each other not against on the big day. Explain about continuity you will need with certain shots such as the walk down the aisle. Work together on the confetti shot etc so you get a good position. Don’t bother videoing people having the group photos but take candid shots of what’s happening around. Wherever possible use a tripod or monopod. Always have a camera top light and use where needed. Think about framing of shots as you take them, if your not sure about framing just watch TV. Always shoot more than you need because you can always cut it out but you cant put it in.
Opps more postings “Ask most couples. The pro’s formal shots amount to ‘record photography’. “ Have you ever seen a pro wedding video ?
“Scorceses dolly's and Spielbergs jibs would inevitably have made some footage more steady but also made it impossible to capture the one offs that make these videos so memorable. “ Sorry but tripod for Church , Monopod out side and or a steady hand and a good eye for the rest.

Well yes, but that's out of necessity and practicality rather than to make something look nice You seem to tar Photographs and Video with the same brush. Photographers take a still of time and do push you about to get the best shots to tell the story of the day. A good Cameraman can capture the day and tell a beautiful story without been obtrusive. |
Guess I've seen a lot of bad cameramen then Well I am sorry but if you charge a fee then you are classed as a professional |
That's a fair point, but you have to remember that different people want different things. Not everybody likes the same TV programmes for instance. Remember about sound try and mic up the groom wherever possible ( radio ) for the big day but remember to turn off when not needed you cant believe what some new husbands say to there new wives. |
I can imagine!!!
Although I didn't agree with your initial "review", it's nice to see you've actually got the experience to back up what you said. Constructive criticism and advice is good, and I think most of what you said makes sense.

On a note to finish this, and on a personal level, I have invested a substantial amount of money in video equipment and always use a two camera setup with the aformentioned wireless mics. I'm also covered by specialist insurance (not cheap) and go to great lengths to ensure my client gets exactly what he/she wants. At the end of the day, I actually make a loss on the two or three weddings per year I've done - the cost of the equipment is multiples in excess of the modest return.
Please remember that this is also "my back yard". I pay for the hosting and spend my time maintaining all that you see. Again, these forums are run at a loss. I'm certainly not in this to make money! I do it for free, and yet can you believe that some people actually complain about things on the site?
That's why I set up this particular area called "Pmip the link". The forums get approximately 5,000 unique visits per day as at May 2005 - so anyone that posts a link is benefiting from my hard work for free.

Marc, we truly appreciate what you do - mantaining a large community of amateur videomakers and constantly providing valuable informational resources. I know how time-consuming and expensive it is to do that, as I've tried it myself in the past and quit the idea. So you should keep up the good work and take into consideration the various suggestions brought to your attention. Nobody is perfect. It's wonderful of you to keep the website running.
I hope you don't plan to close the whole business down, or start charging us money for using the forums/resources... because I were the first one to go.
