I agree. There's more than just one (or tweo) things going on there so you're not going to find one 'silver bullet' to do the whole thing here.
If you have After Effrects then spend an aftrenoon and watch all the video tutorial from Andrew Kramer over at videocopilot. He covers a lot of that type of stuff. Often not as the main subject of the tutorial but as part of creating a good background etc. You'll get a lot of clues.
