I haven't misunderstood anything, it's all there in the small print. To convince me otherwise, all you've got to do is change the clause in the competition whereby you can use all the entries as you wish, anywhere, for ever, without payment.

This is NOT a "standard" clause. It's a way for you to aquire ideas, material and other people's work, for nothing. I shall post the offending clause in the small print again, just in case you misunderstood it.

"when submitting your Contribution to us, you hereby grant us a licence to use, store, copy, modify, adapt, create derivate works from, publish, broadcast, transmit, perform, play, make available to the public and distribute your Contribution (in whole or in part, whether in return for payment or otherwise) in any form and via any medium, and to publicise your Contribution in such manner as we think fit.
The licence which you grant to us is non exclusive, worldwide, royalty free, perpetual, transferable and sub licenseable to others (with the ability for us to grant our sub licensees the right to further sub license). This means that we can exercise our rights globally (over the Internet or otherwise) without any obligation to make payment to you."

That's quite plain... If you enter the competition the organisers, can do what they like with your material (including selling it on) without paying a cent.

Disgusting, dishonest and shameful.

Default help required

this is good i need help on this. i need a clause that everyone is happy with that allows my sponsor, Global Cool, to show the films at any given time. The genuine aim of this is to get people to discuss the subject and show these films, and reward the winning ten with prizes (please do hold your cyisicm and bear with me)

I DO NOT want to exploit and I would welcome help on getting together a cluase that does what i need to do (they are putting in £11k sponsorship) and want to show the films made on their site and viraly. Genuinely I want to do the right thing. I am a filmmaker myself (i have won several awards) and understand the need to not exploit.

If you can help me contructively with out talking down to me i would genuinely appreciate your help.

Of course you could. Just run the competition and leave the copyright with the film maker. Pretty easy and simple I would think. I certainly wouldn't give up rights globally for ever and ever amen.... not even for the chance to win ten grand.

It can't be seriously aimed at pro videographers with that rider..... Can it?

Here's an extract from the competition rules from a magazine I write for.

The copyright of the submissions remains with the entrant. Apart from the winning entries, the organisers will not reproduce, publish, transmit or distribute any entry, or excerpt, without the written permission of the entrant and the payment of the appropriate fees. The winning entries will only be used in connection with publicity for the competition and any use not directly involved with the competition will only be with the entrant's written permission.

This is the "standard" for respectable competitions.

Edit: There's no reason why you couldn't do the same. Oh, and lose the phrase which says that you can change the rules at any time, very sneaky that.

ALL info will be on the site but the only way to run like this is to send an FAQ when people register, although now i will add it in the interim in case people are troubled by this. It seems the level of cynisism is even more than i expected.

anyway good luck all. getting bucketloads of registrations so please choose to do as you wish
The only thing you seem to have bucketloads of is . . .
, from the reaction hereabouts.
