What do you guys think?
Beginners Video editing system:

Case: Antec Sonata with 380W power supply

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Orleans 2000MHz HT Socket AM2 Processor

Mobo: Asus M2N-E

RAM: Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800

DVDRW: NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A

Hard drive: 2 x Western Digital WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA

Monitor: 2 x SAMSUNG 930B-Black Black 19" 8ms LCD Monitor

Video: PNY VCG66256XPB Geforce 6600 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video

Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24bit 70SB041000000 7.1 Channels PCI

Minus rebates and discounts: Total = $996


Is the power supply and video card adequate? Is 2G of memory overkill?

Yes, I would certainly consider upping the power supply. 2 GB of RAM is about the norm these days for a new editing PC for use enthusiasts; and the graphics card will do fine for editing until more software takes advantage of the power of the GPU.

Why wouldn't a 380W power supply be enough for this build? This is an estimation.

100W for CPU
40W for motherboard
30W for video
30W for 3 harddrives
10W for fans and dvdrw

210W total

How did you derive those figures? Power usage spikes at various times and is not a constant.

These were estimates from what I have read. It's kinda hard for me to realize that this build needs more that 380W.

The PSU will be fine, but the high end, more robust units tend to come in bigger sizes. So what I'm really saying is that the higher end unites are rated higher, not that you couldn't possibly use the PC with that amount of power

A reliable power supply is as important as the size. Get a good brand, but how you decide what good is, not sure really, I guess good means not too cheap and maybe one that the overclockers go for.

carylee, thanks for the calc. Is the calculator base on peak load or idle?

278W total with an X2 3800+. Switching to X2 since AMD prices are going down low.
