Default Hard Drive Configuration

Can someone please suggest how I should configure my hard drives?

At a minimum I want 1 HD for my OS/APPS and 1 for storage. Is it usually a good idea to have a dedicated video capture drive as well? Which drives need to be fast, which ones can I save on?

Thanks

Hi, you need to have at least two hard drivers, one for OS and apps and one for the video work (aka capture and editing scratch disk), a dedicated one for storage is also a very good idea (if you really want to, otherwise you can store your projects on tape or DVD). Except for the storage drive, all disks must be as fast (aka more rpm and more cache) as possible. Especially the video drive.

If you have or are thinking of getting a real time Matriox card they absolutely dictate a dedicated capture disk. Other than that it doesn't really matter.

I have been just playing around with video editing lately. My current PC just isnt cutting it. Im just a beginer and do it for fun, not professionally.

My new build (for 3d cad & video editing) consist of...

Pentium D 3.0 or 3.2 GHz

2 Gigs of DDR2 ram

ASUS P5LD2 MoBo

ATI FireGL V3400 Vid Card

I just need some opinions on what and how many hard drives to buy and what data to put on each HD. I would like to get a 80 Gig HD for my OS/Apps drive but the smallest 7200rpm / 16MB cache drive i have seen is 160 Gigs.

Should I consider partioning drives or does that degrade performance?

I use a 10000rpm Sata Raptor drive with dual partitions for my OS and Programs. Along with a 300G SATA for Prerender Data and Projects. Along with 2 80g PATA's for Storage and Backup.

Similar to mine Carylee. I am sure the 10000 rpm raptor sooped up my system and I am considoring a fast raptor raid for system in my next pc. Ordinary satas are my working video drives and my old pensioned off patas hold multiple copies of all my archived work.
