Default wanting to build a video editing pc

hi im wanting to buy a pc that will be solely used for editing my home movies and semi pro, i am thinking about using pinnacle software and am now ready to go to my local pc store and ask them to build me ????? just wondering if someone can tell me what i need to ask for. what you have that works very. well im hoping to spend around about $3000 or less.
i am a pc user who just jumps on pc and users but has no idear about whats in the box till i try and use it and it dosnt respond to what i want or is slower than expected.
so if someone can help me out by telling me excactly what i need to ask for that would be great

I suggest....

Dual core. Fast (very fast) system drive, maybe fast raid. Lots of drive space for video (normal sata fine), maybe redunadant raid. Two big monitors.

Default argghh have decided to go for vegas6 not pinacle

need now to build this pc to run vegas6 as i have been reading to many bad reviews about pinnacle10 i would assume these specs you advised me on would still be suitable,

Oh yea, i run vegas fine on a xp3000 with a fast raptor as system drive. It works in real time fine for straightforward editing but the more complex effects slow the preview and neccesitates a lower quality setting or smaller preview window. I rarely find this a problem even tho I often use lots of effects.

I presume real time capabilities and render times would be much better on a newer system.
