Default Storage Question

Hello,
I recently filmed a documentary, and now have to edit it. I have over 17 HOURS to edit. I know I'll need between 200 and 300 gigabytes of space. So I'm going to buy a new hard drive. Is external a good choice? Or would an external drive transfer too slowly for editing video?

(I have USB 2.0 and a firewire capture card. I'm not sure if I can use the capture card like a normal USB port.)

Thanks!
Nick Pattison

Hi Nick
You'll have to use your firewire connection for capturing the footage and the USB device can most likely not be used as a port hub.
Keep in mind that although an external HDD might be a good option for storage, it might not be supported for capture by your NLE, or provide good performance. Why would you want an external HDD for capture?

Well, I do tons of video editing, but for this project I'm going to need a new hd. I don't need an external (although all of my IDE ports are taken up), I was just wondering if an external would transfer fast enough.

I'll probably go with an internal, I was just wondering about my options before I chose.
Thanks!

What is better? USB 2 external h drive or FIREWIRE external h drive?
Is the FIREWIRE data transfer slower than USB 2?

Please help

USB 2.0 is approximately the same speed as Firewire, but Firewire is capable of a higher sustained transfer rate.
