Hi guys,
quick question. Would a single core pentium 4 at 3.4ghz handle video editing better than a dual core 2.8ghz processor? These two are both within my price range, and I just wondered.
also, would a 512mb GFX card be over kill, or would it be beneficial?
and one last thing, SATA is faster than ATA, and noticably right? coz I have seen a 400GB ATA HDD for around £100, but I am warey because I am still under the impression that SATA is oodles faster.
any thoughts?

Not sure about the CPU question. Dual Core is the future though, but that doesn't really answer your question. Anyone else?
512mb is overkill for video editing. If you want to play games though, it'll help immensely.
SATA is definitely faster, and very much preferable. Can't see a reason not to choose SATA myself.

cool, as I suspected. I thought SATA was the way forward, just thought i'd check!
Yeah, as for the CPU issue, I am unsure as to what to do with that!

Dual core for sure. SATA deffo. One for system, another for storage, if you can afford it go for fast raid for the system and safe raid for the media drives. At least a gig of ram. As said the g card is the least important bit. Considor 2 monitors too.

whoa, dont say that so fast, new NLE's are using the graphics card and gpu to render, basically making them even better at realtime!!!

True but any modern g card will do the job nicely I am sure.

It certainly won't do any harm, but the money would be better spent on a faster CPU or bigger hard drive.

ok, cool. I just saw a 512 on offer, thought i'd give it a whirl!
so if I got:
2.8 ghz dual core
250 GB HDD for media
80 GB for apps, OS etc
2GB Ram
512 mb GFX
DVD re-writer
dual monitors + TV monitor
coupled together with my old version of premier 6.0, that'd be a good start?
I obviously have various other things to add with it, firewire, 5.1 soundcard, kick ass speakers, VHS recorder, Analogue to digital converter, DVD player, V/O mic + amp > into comp. 2 DV cameras, wireless keyboard + mouse.
Would all this do me some serious DV editing, and once software is upgraded, sort me out on the way towards HDV editing?
