that should be good for a few years actually, as that computer setup is sort of top notch at this time in life!

brilliant, ok cool. I'll bare all this in mind.

if I have this set up, am I still likely to drop frames / have slow video clips / other problems associated with video editing, or will it run like a dream? (i've never had a computer as fast you see, so I don't know!)

Depends on what type of PCI-e you're talking about. x16 is faster than AGP, but x1 is slower than AGP.

I'd drop the videocard down, get a second 250gb HDD, and put the HDDs in RAID0. Just make sure it's not a Maxtor (benchmarks for most of the newer models aren't so good... happens every once in a while to all HDD manfacturers)... and probably not a WD 2500KS either. 2500KS's are great drives for general use and gaming, but they don't have the sequential read rates that you'll need. They only have 83gb/platter as opposed to 100gb/platter and 125gb/platter in other drives, so with the same RPMs, it doesn't quite keep up. I'd suggest SATA, but only because the cords are much neater. IDE ribbon cable is cumbersome and I HATE IT. Always have. Thank goodness for SATA... isn't really any faster, but it keeps your case nice and tidy and isn't a pain to work with.

Samsung SpinPoints, Seagate 7200.9s, and Hitachi T7K250s are all great drives.

Set the drives up in NTFS, use a large cluster size (64kb) and a decent sized stripe in your RAID (512kb, 1024kb).

I can definitely tell you dual core is a big thumbs up.

I am lucky enough to have a 3.2ghz dual core system and a back up 3.6ghz HT system, other than the processors they are identical in every other way.

The dual core system is noticeably faster even with the slower ghz.

Mike.
