hi, i have decided to get a new 15" powerbook g4 as my first editing computer (i have to have a laptop as I travel a lot). what upgrades would you recommend?
mainly is my money better spent upgrading the ram to 1gb or getting the faster 7200rpm hard drive? do i need to upgrade the ram or will it work fine without it?
any other advice also welcomed
going to be using premier pro or final cut

First things first..upgrade HD..i would buy a USB2 one as its bigger and you can put it in diffrent computers..DABS sell i nice 300GB one.... upgrade the ram!.what software you using?

I agree with what Luke said, but instead of USB2, you could try firewire (firewire 800 perhaps if your laptop supports it).
More RAM is definitely a good and worthwhile upgrade.

USB2 is compatble with any NLE editors..i looked and some things (like adobe) doesnt work with some firewire HD..sorry to come accross nasty!

I don't really see your logic Luke. External drives have were in the past not recommended for use in video editing due to:
1) Bandwidth limitations of the transfer medium (USB 1.1 once upon a time); and
2) The generally poor specifications of hard drives used in external drives.
Although USB2 is theoretically the match if not the supperior of firewire, the latter method of connection is better suited to large multimedia files. Generally there is no longer an issue of external drives not giving equal perfomance to internals, but you should always take care when chosing a drive to buy.
You'll pay a premium for the luxury of an external disk. And as Mike commented a few days ago, watch out for the increased popularity of external SATA drives. Motherboards are being shipped with external plates for SATA connections, and you can buy PCI expansion cards for bothe internal and external drives. Definately worth investigating.
To the best of my knowledge stating that USB2 HDD are compatible with all NLEs is a bit misleading. If the company supplying the software don't actively support external HDDS, you may find yourself stuck.

Thats true.What is hould have written is "USB2 Hard discs are ment to work with more NLE editors" sorry if i mis lead any one!

As are drives with firewire connection. I don't understand the logic behind USB drives being somehow more compatible.
