A very good and stable PSU is a must for your rig. The worst that can happen is that you fry your mobo and other components. if you are willing to take the risk ---you have been warned.

i would recommend the Seasonic S12 range, good reviews and can personally vouch for it.

If I was buying a psu for a new system (soon, soon) I certainly twould buy a quality one maybe a bit bigger for peace of mind. I think quality is more import ant than quanity (of watts).

My current pc just grew over 2 years around this power supply and all reamins well.

If you think about it...

My cpu = 80w, 5 drives = 50 w (ish)
SLowish g card= 40w
5 cards, dunno 25 w maybe.
A few fans = 10w

That is 215 watts in total. No problem.

An extreme gamer might have a something thirstier;

Hot OC pentium = 160w (?)
Fat graphics card = 100w
Two drives / fans / cards = 50w maybe.

Well that is still only 310 w.

Some lads might have 2 g cars I suppose but I find it hard to imagine why anyone needs 600 w.

No I know, it's to power all those bloody leds and light tubes!

not only that, but most psu's that are rated "500w" are only pushing 350ish..... unless they are "true rated"

Hi all I am thinking of having a system built based on the AMD OPTERON 885 dual core processor using 2 of these and ATI'S crossfire graphics cards (2 of), can anyone tell me which is the best motherboard to get and also which is the most efficient and fastest ram to get as I will be editing video from 6 cameras using premier pro 2.0 and encore dvd 2.0 I have a budget of around £8,000-£10,000. All help is greatly appreciated.

I am hoping to be recording a gig for my friends rock band in early september
I will be using 6 Canon XLH1'S can anyone also tell me if there is equipment that will allow me to switch between cameras and record onto full size DV CASSETTES as the gigs I will be recording are 2 hours long and I dont want to be limited to 1 hour tapes having to swap tapes inbetween. Thanks all

IF you are insisting on a opteron system then go to the tyan website, this is where I get most of my mobo's from, you will see the difference in the prices and the specifications.
There are limits to the PCI express slots that come with the boards so make sure you select the right one. (though gaming GPU's wont make any difference to the editing)
OCZ build some great RAM, there top of the line DDR offers lots of low clock cycle turn-arounds you will be looking at something like 2,3,3,5 named on them. but then you will still have to check the mobo to see if it will run that type of RAM or if you need to know lots about computers and BIOS to set them manually your self.
As well, you may find that you require ECC RAM - not cheap.

The pricing for these parts are around £450 mobo, £240 per gig of RAM and you will need 4 gigs (2 Gig per processor)

For the tape Q, you can shoot in PCCAM and run things througth a desk with ample recording facilities, these are around £5000.

I am (amongst many it seems) also about to purchase my new computer, after spending a few years continously ripping apart my old pc I feel it's only time to give it a break and start again..

The only issues I'm really dealing with at the moment is which route to take..
AMD or Intel..

As I am also a keen gamer, I am currently leaning towards an AMD set up.. something along the lines of:
