I was wondering if someone would be willing to help me out with this, even though it's not specifically about a video editing PC:
My sister-in-law's computer has been acting up ever since her boyfriend tried to reinstall the OS. Now when the computer turns on, it gets through POST fine (it seems to, anyway) and makes it all the way to the Windows XP page with the scrolling bar. After that the screen goes blank and it makes a funny beep. What's going on?
If this isn't an appropriate question for this forum then go ahead and lock it. I just didn't want to be a jerk and sign up to some other message board somewhere just to ask one question.

Beeps on boot act as code to diagnose any fault. Your problem occurs after this, so it could be anything to be honest. Have you tried booting in safe mode?

If that doesn't work, reset all BIOS settings to their default state and then restore them one by one to your preference to see which one is causing the issue.

How do I boot in safe mode or return factory settings? I'm having a hard time finding this stuff in her BIOS.

BIOS is normally hit DELETE at boot, safe mode is F8.

F8 isn't doing much for me (and by "much", I mean "anything"). The only options I have are F2 and F12 (Setup and Boot Menu, respectively). It won't even let me choose F12...

F8 is booting to Windows in safe mode. You need to do this after it goes through the initial checks.

I did get to a screen which asked me which OS I wanted to run. I don't know if that's what happened with F8 but I only had the one option to choose from anyway and it was still no good. (EDIT - tried F8 again, didn't do anything)
I lied before: F12 does do something. It gives me this list -
1 Normal
2 Diskette Drive
3 Hard Disk Drive C:
4 IDE CD-Rom Device
5 System Setup
6 IDE Drive Diagnostics
7 Boot to Utility Partitions

To use the F8 key to start Windows XP in Safe mode
Restart the computer.
Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

Ok, Safe Mode > Asked me which OS to run > Got a screen full of lines to the effect of: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\Windows\ "something something something". All but one have System32 and more stuff after it. The only exception is one that has FONTS then something.... Alot of the System32 variety have drivers after it.
