Just curious, on the back of my computer there's a connection point (male) with the symbol IOIOI next to it. What is this for?

Well serial connectors were used for a lot of devices a couple of years ago, before the appearance of USB. You had peripherals like mice, PDA's or modems on serial, and even video editing controllers.
Serial modems are still used today (rarely), and I still own a PDA which connects through that serial port (yes, it's manufactured almost 5 years ago and it's still everything I need).
