So for the smaller hard drive you suggested loads of cache; is 8mb enough or should I really opt for something with 16mb? And for the second, larger hard drive it should be nice and big but cache doesn't matter as much; so is 8mb still enough?

yep 8 megs will be fine, just remebering the days when they didnt have any cache at all :(

It boils down to the cost of the drive, the faster the access time and hte larger the cache the better.

but if for example a 16 meg cache 80 gig drive costs £ 50 more than a 8 meg 80gig drive, it isnt worth the extra money.

I hope this is the last time I have to bother you guys with this:

In order to capture to my second hard drive, do I basically need to install my video editing software to that drive? Therefore when I capture it'll capture to that second HD and not the first. Does that make sense??

My friend and I recently goofed around with his camera and when I captured I wasn't even thinking about the second HD. So now I guess it's on my first HD.

Don't you just tell your software what drive to capture to in the preferences configuration? I use Prem Elements and you can point the software in all sorts of directions, scratch disks, capture drives etc.

That's right - when you create your project, you choose where to save it and it saves it there (well, it does in Premiere Elephants anyway)

in the options of the software it will allow you to designate a folder to capture to.

Sorry to bring this thread back up but I may have found what I was looking for (although it doesn't matter much now).

Adobe Premiere Elements>Edit>Preferences>Scratch Disks>Captured Video???

Just set that to whatever HD I want it captured to?

Yes, you got it,
the idea is that windows and its installed programs including Premiere Elements live separate from your video drive, both for capture, rendering ( with temp files), and output. I also use Liquid edition which specifies that a different hd or partition for capture, render are ideal.

since we're talkn about HD here, I have planned on getting a 250+gb external firewire HD next yr. I currently have a 40 C: and a seagate 120gb 2nd HD & pinnacle studio 9 SE. pinnacle doesn't like my 2nd HD, doesn't seem to be fast enough.....whatever. Will it like an external firewire HD? Or what should I do?
