Default Is Toshiba Qosmio suitable for DV capture/editing?

can you recommend this laptop?

1.7GHz Centrino
5400rpm 80Gb - yes 5400rpm - but can it handle DV without dropping frames? Is 5400rpm really no good? Martin Walker of Sound On Sound magazine (www.soundonsound.com) did some bench marks and found that there was not a big difference in performance between 5400rpm and 7200rpm

Not a big difference? Can't comment on that. But every bit of disk performance counts in video editing, so why risk it? To be honest, a centrino based laptop isn't exactly best suited to video editing.

I wouldn't recommend it, but that's not to say you can't use it. Just be aware that you may need extra storage space (this will probably be external), you'll need to keep on top of your usage and keep the drive regularly defragged and uncluttered.

7200 rpm laptop drives are quite a bit more expensive than 5400

I would suggest u get an Asus laptop barebone then build it urself

my dad has a less than 4 lb notebook with:
1.7 Pentium M
768mb of Ram
60 gig hdd

for $1500
