Default Server Clusters

I'm running a dual 2.8 ghz system (hyper threading) and have been seeing where I can pickup 1unit rackmount servers for about 700 to 1000 dollars depending on the configuration. I'm doing a bit of research on the possibility and the return on investment by building a renderfarm out of say 4 or 8 rackmounts. Curious to know if anyone is using such a configuration or if they've worked on a renderfarm and what type of results they achieved.

Thanks,
MIGUEL
