For anyone interested in the specs of my computer at an affordable price, shop around. I picked mine up, custom built for £1200. A decent price, I reckon. That included extras such as printers, software and so on.

Nice set up but raid 0 ? ? You dont really need tha speed and you really really dont need the much reduced falult tolerance. My next box will have a raid 1 or 5 array if i can afford it.

For capturing the speed is not needed, you 're right on that. But for game-videorecording it's a big plus if you want to record gameplay while playing for example. I use fraps (full version) for that and record gaming action at 40 to 60 fps (1600 x 1200) which produces enormous files, because fraps just screendumps to AVI. If I record half an hour of gaming I get about 80-90 GB of footage. Slow harddiskperformance, clogging up the computer, screws up your game and make the video worthless, because of shitty gaming due to harddisklag, or because you gotta turn down quality-settings to improve performance.

I do regular backing up of my material. I keep my DV videotapes stored well too, so I 'm not that worried on loosing things that are only on my computer.

Well why not just record the game at a more sensible res and frame rate. Cant the games just record a 'log file' so bits an be repeated?

After all the resultant edited pieice is going to play at a much lower res / frame rate and a much mcuh lower bit rate if it is 'netcast'.

I think i might be missing something here....

Games play fluently on a computer anywhere above 60 fps, in general it's the higher the better, especially on shooters. Most shooterplayers prefer 100+

If you use FRAPS to record it locks the game's framerate to the recording framerate, therefor you want it as high as possible and at least 60 fps.

If you use FRAPS to record 60 fps, the game will run at 60 fps (if your pc can handle it o/c). If you turn it down to 25 fps for "more" performance (considering harddisk), it'll instantly drop your gameframerate to 25 fps and the game will start to feel laggy.

Yes, some games do have the possibility to make a demo, that you can playback later. For example Call of Duty 4. In that case, I prefer to replay the demo and record it at normal framerates. My next gaming video will be made this way on call of duty 4. The plan is to have all people in a server record their own demo's on the same game they play together, and afterward record all points of view to all the action and using that to edit and make a high quality movie for our website.

I hope I explained it well, feel free to ask, I 'm quite experienced when it comes to gaming and PC performance, just dropping in here to get more video-editing knowledge for video made with a camera.
